A persistent myth holds that people with deeper skin tones don't need sunscreen. It is half a truth wrapped around a harmful mistake. Melanin does provide some natural protection — but nowhere near enough to skip sunscreen, and the reasons deeper skin needs it are, if anything, more relevant to everyday concerns like even tone.

Why the protection still matters

Deeper skin tones do burn less easily and have a lower rate of some sun-related damage, but 'less' is not 'none' — ultraviolet still ages the skin, still contributes to cancer risk, and, crucially, still drives hyperpigmentation. The single most common skin concern in medium-to-deep skin — dark marks, uneven tone, post-acne pigmentation — is worsened and prolonged by sun exposure.

Beating the white cast

The other lever is chemistry. Organic filters dissolve in the formulation and are genuinely colourless, which is why chemical sunscreens rarely have this problem at all. For anyone who tolerates them, this resolves the issue completely.

For deeper skin tones the tinted mineral sunscreen is not a compromise; it is arguably the best product available. It solves the cast, and iron oxides filter high-energy visible light, which independently stimulates pigmentation in melanin-rich skin.

That second point is what makes it a genuine upgrade rather than a cosmetic workaround. Trials in melasma have found tinted formulations outperform untinted ones with equivalent ultraviolet protection, and the difference is attributed to the visible-light filtering.

The obstacle has historically been shade range. Many brands offered one universal tint that suited a narrow band of complexions, though this has improved substantially and continues to.

For anyone with pigmentation concerns in deeper skin, a well-matched tinted sunscreen does more work than any brightening serum in the routine.

Testing a sunscreen properly before committing

And accept that finding the right one may take two or three attempts. That is normal, it is the same for everybody, and the search is worth completing rather than abandoning after the first chalky bottle.

What the evidence does not support is the inference that skipping sunscreen is the remedy. The sensible resolution is to treat these as two separate problems with two separate solutions. Protect the skin from ultraviolet, and address vitamin D through diet or supplementation, which is cheap, reliable, dose-controlled and carries none of the pigmentary or carcinogenic risk that deliberate sun exposure does.

Anyone genuinely concerned should have a level measured rather than reasoning from first principles about it, since the answer varies enormously with latitude, season, diet and how much time is spent outdoors regardless of sunscreen.
