Vitamin C is one of the better-researched skincare antioxidants, and a deservedly popular one. But it is also notoriously temperamental, and many people buy a serum, use it for months, and never realise it stopped working weeks ago. Understanding what it does — and why it degrades — is the difference between benefit and wasted money.
The ingredient is genuinely good. Keeping it effective is the real challenge.
What it can do
As an antioxidant, vitamin C helps neutralise some of the daily damage from environmental stressors like pollution and UV, complementing rather than replacing sunscreen. Over consistent use it is associated with a brighter, more even tone and support for the skin’s firmness, since it plays a role in the processes behind collagen.
It is best thought of as a daytime protective and brightening step, not an overnight transformation. Its rewards are cumulative and subtle.
Why it stops working
Vitamin C, especially in its most-studied form, is unstable: exposure to air, light and heat gradually oxidises it, turning it less effective — and often turning the serum yellow, orange or brown. A serum that has darkened noticeably has likely lost much of its potency, no matter how it smells or feels.
This is why packaging matters. Opaque, air-restricting bottles protect the ingredient; clear droppers left open on a sunny shelf destroy it.
Getting the most from it
Store it cool, dark and closed, and do not buy more than you will use before it degrades. Introduce it gradually, as some formulas can tingle at first, and pair it with daily sunscreen, since the two work well together against environmental damage.
If your serum has turned dark, replace it rather than hoping. And remember its ceiling: vitamin C is a helpful supporting act, not the star that replaces the fundamentals of sun protection and a steady routine.
What an antioxidant actually does
Ultraviolet light does two kinds of damage. It hits DNA directly, producing lesions the cell must repair, and it generates reactive oxygen species — unstable molecules that go on to damage lipids, proteins and DNA indirectly. Sunscreen reduces the dose arriving; antioxidants address the second kind of damage from the dose that gets through.
Reactive oxygen species are not exotic. They are produced continuously by ordinary metabolism, and skin maintains its own antioxidant network to handle them — vitamin C, vitamin E, glutathione and several enzymes, working as an interlocking system rather than in isolation.
Ultraviolet exposure depletes that network. Measurements after sun exposure show substantially reduced vitamin C levels in the skin, which is the specific gap a topical serum is intended to fill.
This framing matters because it sets expectations correctly. An antioxidant is supplementing a defensive system that already exists, not adding a capability the skin lacked.
The jobs vitamin C does beyond brightening
Its role in collagen synthesis is the least discussed and the most fundamental. Vitamin C is an obligatory cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase, the enzymes that stabilise the collagen triple helix. Without it, collagen cannot be properly formed — this is the mechanism behind scurvy.
That is a requirement rather than a boost, and it is met by adequate dietary intake for most people. Whether topical application meaningfully increases dermal collagen synthesis in already well-nourished skin is a more open question than the marketing suggests.
The photoprotective role is better supported. Applied before exposure, vitamin C reduces the erythema and the markers of oxidative damage that follow ultraviolet, and it does so additively with sunscreen rather than instead of it.
The pigmentation effect — tyrosinase inhibition — is the one people buy it for and arguably the weakest of the three. It works, it is mild, and it takes months.
Why the bottle stops working
L-ascorbic acid oxidises. Exposure to oxygen, light, heat and dissolved metal ions all accelerate it, and the reaction produces dehydroascorbic acid and then further breakdown products with little or no benefit.
The visible signal is colour. Fresh serum is clear to pale straw; as it oxidises it moves through yellow to orange to brown. Deep amber means the active is largely gone, and the remaining liquid is doing very little.
Some oxidation products may themselves be mildly irritating, which is why an old serum can start stinging on skin that tolerated it perfectly well two months earlier.
None of this is a manufacturing defect. It is the fundamental chemistry of the molecule, and every formulation decision around it — opaque packaging, airless pumps, chelators, anhydrous bases — exists to slow a reaction that cannot be prevented.
The clock starts before you buy it
A serum has already spent time in a warehouse, on a lorry and on a shelf before it reaches you, and in most of those places nobody was controlling for temperature. A bottle bought from a shop window in August has had a harder life than the same bottle bought in a climate-controlled pharmacy.
This is one reason to prefer retailers with high turnover and to be cautious with heavily discounted stock, which is sometimes discounted because it has been sitting.
It is also an argument for products in opaque or airless packaging over clear dropper bottles, since the protection matters most during the part of the product's life you have no control over.
Batch codes exist and can often be decoded through online tools, which is more effort than most people will make and is available to anyone who wants to check.
Storage habits that actually extend it
The bathroom is the worst room in the house for this product. Repeated cycles of heat and humidity from showers accelerate degradation considerably, and the cabinet nearest the shower is where most serums die.
A bedroom drawer is better. A refrigerator is better still and is worth doing for anything expensive — the reaction rate roughly halves for every ten degrees of cooling, so refrigeration meaningfully extends useful life.
Close the bottle immediately rather than leaving it open during the rest of the routine. With a dropper, avoid drawing air in and out repeatedly, which is exactly what using a dropper does and is the argument against that format.
Buy small. Thirty millilitres used daily lasts about two months, which is close to how long a well-formulated serum stays meaningfully active after opening. A large economical bottle is not economical if half of it oxidises.
Formulation choices that buy stability
Ferulic acid stabilises L-ascorbic acid and increases its photoprotective effect, which is why the fifteen per cent ascorbic acid with vitamin E and ferulic acid combination has been cloned so widely. It is one of the few ingredient trios in cosmetic skincare with published support behind it.
Chelating agents such as EDTA bind trace metal ions that would otherwise catalyse oxidation. Their presence on an ingredient list is a small signal that the formulator was thinking about stability.
Anhydrous formulations — vitamin C suspended in silicone or oil rather than dissolved in water — sidestep the problem almost entirely, since the oxidation reaction needs water. They feel different and they last far longer.
Derivatives are the other route. Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, sodium ascorbyl phosphate and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate are all considerably more stable than L-ascorbic acid, at the cost of requiring conversion in the skin at efficiencies that are not well quantified.
Should you use an oxidised serum?
It will not harm you in any serious sense, but it is not doing what you bought it for, and there are two specific reasons to stop using it rather than finishing the bottle.
The first is that oxidation products can irritate, and a serum that has turned is a plausible cause of stinging that gets blamed on the skin becoming sensitive.
The second is that dark oxidised serum can temporarily stain skin and, more visibly, light fabric and pillowcases. This is cosmetic and it is annoying.
Slight yellowing is tolerable — many good serums develop a straw tint within weeks and remain effective. Orange or brown is the point at which the bottle has finished its useful life regardless of how much liquid remains in it.
Getting the timing right
Morning application makes the most sense, because the primary benefit is supplementing photoprotection and antioxidant defence is most useful in place before the exposure rather than twelve hours after it.
Apply it to clean skin, before moisturiser and well before sunscreen, and give it a couple of minutes to settle. The old advice to wait twenty or thirty minutes is overstated; a short pause is sufficient.
It absorbs best on skin that is neither dripping nor completely arid, and low-pH formulations sting more on damp skin, which is worth knowing if the first fortnight is uncomfortable.
Consistency beats intensity here as everywhere. A gentle derivative used every morning for a year outperforms a twenty per cent L-ascorbic acid serum used for three weeks and then abandoned in a drawer.
What to expect, and over what period
Nothing visible in the first month. The photoprotective and antioxidant benefits are preventive and produce no observable change — they are reducing damage that would otherwise have accumulated, which is invisible by definition.
Pigmentation responds over eight to twelve weeks of daily use, and the change is gradual enough that it is far easier to see in a photograph taken at the start than in the mirror at any point.
Texture and overall tone often improve somewhat earlier, though a portion of that is attributable to the hydration and the sunscreen habit that usually accompanies starting a serious routine.
If nothing has changed after four months of consistent use with a product that is still pale, the honest answer is that this ingredient may be doing preventive work you cannot see rather than corrective work you can. That is a reasonable thing to keep paying for, provided the expectation is set correctly.
Diet, and where the vitamin C in your skin comes from
Skin obtains most of its vitamin C from the bloodstream, delivered from the diet, and healthy skin maintains concentrations considerably higher than blood plasma through active transport. This is the primary supply route, and topical application is a supplement to it rather than a replacement.
The relevant consequence is that somebody with genuinely inadequate dietary vitamin C has a problem no serum resolves, and somebody eating adequately has a system already operating close to saturation.
Where topical application earns its place is that oral intake plateaus. Beyond a certain daily dose, absorption is limited and excess is excreted, so raising skin levels further through diet is not straightforward. A topical route bypasses that ceiling for the skin specifically.
That is a narrow but real advantage, and it is the strongest argument for the category once dietary intake is adequate — which for most people it already is.
