Walk any skincare aisle and you are surrounded by reassurance: natural, clean, chemical-free, non-toxic. These words feel meaningful and sell enormously well, and almost none of them have any regulated definition or reliable connection to whether a product is safe or effective. Untangling them is one of the most useful things a skincare shopper can do.

The starting fact that dissolves the whole framing: everything is a chemical. Water is a chemical. The vitamin C in an orange and the vitamin C in a serum are the same molecule. 'Chemical-free' skincare is a physical impossibility, which tells you the phrase is marketing, not information.

Natural isn't automatically safer

The appeal of 'natural' rests on an assumption that nature is gentle and labs are suspect. Skin does not agree. Some of the most common causes of irritation and allergic reactions in skincare are natural: essential oils, certain plant extracts and fragrances, citrus oils that increase sun sensitivity. Poison ivy is entirely natural; a well-tested synthetic preservative keeps your cream from growing bacteria.

This is not to say natural ingredients are bad — many are lovely and effective. It is to say the natural-versus-synthetic line simply does not predict safety or gentleness. The right question is whether a specific ingredient suits your skin, not where it came from.

Synthetic isn't automatically harmful

Equally, laboratory-made ingredients are not villains. Many of the best-studied, most effective and most reliable skincare ingredients are synthetic or lab-refined: stable vitamin C derivatives, retinoids, precisely made hyaluronic acid, effective sunscreen filters, and the preservatives that make the difference between a safe product and a contaminated one. Synthesis often means purity, consistency and safety a raw botanical can't match.

'Non-toxic' is another empty flag: the dose makes the poison, cosmetic ingredients are used at safe concentrations, and the word implies rivals are toxic without evidence. Fear is a powerful, and profitable, marketing tool.

What to look at instead

Ignore the mood words and read for substance: the actual ingredient list, the concentration of any active if disclosed, whether the formula suits your skin type, and whether the brand explains its choices rather than just its vibe. A thoughtfully formulated product with synthetic ingredients can be gentler and more effective than an all-natural one, and vice versa — it depends entirely on the formulation.

None of this means you must abandon botanical ingredients you love. It means judging products by what they contain and how your skin responds, not by a reassuring adjective with no definition. The most 'clean' thing you can do for your skin is think clearly about it.

The word has no definition, and that is the point

In most jurisdictions, natural has no legal meaning when applied to a cosmetic. There is no threshold of plant-derived content, no register of permitted processes, and no authority verifying the claim. A product may contain a single botanical extract at a fraction of a per cent and describe itself as natural without breaking any rule.

This is not a loophole that regulators have overlooked. Terms with legal definitions carry substantiation requirements; terms without them do not. The commercial value of the word is precisely that it communicates a great deal while committing to nothing.

Various private certification schemes exist and they set genuine standards, but they differ from one another substantially and none of them is what the word on a bottle refers to unless a specific certification mark appears alongside it.

So the first move when reading natural on packaging is to treat it as marketing copy rather than as information about the contents, which is what it legally is.

Everything is chemicals, and it matters why

Water is a chemical. So is every plant extract, every essential oil, every vitamin and every protein in your own skin. Chemical-free is not an overstatement or a simplification; it describes a category with nothing in it, and a product satisfying the claim would be an empty container.

The point of insisting on this is not pedantry. The chemical-versus-natural framing invites people to sort ingredients by origin rather than by what they do, and origin is close to useless as a predictor of either safety or effect.

What determines whether something is safe is the molecule, the dose, the route of exposure and the individual. Botulinum toxin is natural and is among the most poisonous substances known. Purified water is synthetic in the sense that somebody made it and is entirely benign.

Once the frame shifts from where did this come from to what does this molecule do at this concentration, the whole vocabulary stops being useful and the ingredient list starts being useful instead.

The plants that cause the most trouble

Contact dermatitis clinics see a consistent pattern, and it does not favour the natural side of the argument. Fragrance is the most common cosmetic allergen, and botanical fragrance materials and essential oils are heavily represented within it.

Specific offenders recur. Limonene and linalool, which occur naturally in citrus and lavender, oxidise on exposure to air into potent sensitisers. Tea tree oil is a recognised allergen. Ylang-ylang, peppermint and cinnamon bark oil all appear regularly in patch test results.

Propolis, from bees, is a frequent cause of reactions. So is colophony, from pine. Compositae plants — chamomile, calendula, arnica, echinacea — are a well-documented allergen family and are exactly the ingredients marketed most enthusiastically for sensitive skin.

None of this makes these ingredients unusable. It makes the assumption that plant-derived means gentle empirically wrong, and it is wrong in the specific direction that causes the most harm to the people acting on it.

Why synthetic ingredients often have the better record

A synthesised ingredient can be produced to a defined purity, in a consistent composition, batch after batch. A plant extract varies with the growing season, the soil, the harvest, the extraction method and the part of the plant used, and contains hundreds of compounds most of which are uncharacterised.

That variability is a safety problem as much as an efficacy one. Standardising the dose of an active is straightforward when the active is a known molecule at a known concentration and difficult when it arrives inside a botanical matrix.

Several of the best-tolerated ingredients in dermatology are synthetic for exactly this reason. Petrolatum has one of the lowest allergy rates of any topical substance. Dimethicone is essentially inert. Glycerin, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid are all produced synthetically and all have excellent safety records.

The pattern is not that synthetic is better. It is that purity, characterisation and dose control are better, and those tend to come with synthesis.

The preservative question, taken seriously

Preservative-free is the natural claim with the highest potential to cause actual harm. A water-containing product without an adequate preservative system grows bacteria, yeast and mould, and applying a contaminated cream to broken skin or near the eyes carries real risk.

Parabens took the reputational damage that drove this market, on the strength of a small 2004 study that found paraben traces in breast tumour tissue. The study had no control group, demonstrated no causal link, and its own author subsequently said it did not show what it was being cited to show.

The subsequent reformulation was not obviously an improvement. Methylisothiazolinone, adopted widely as a replacement, produced a documented epidemic of contact allergy substantial enough that regulators restricted its use in leave-on products.

The genuinely preservative-free options are anhydrous — oils, balms, powders — which contain no water for anything to grow in. Everything else needs a preservative system, and a well-chosen one is a safety feature rather than a compromise.

Where natural products genuinely deliver

It would be dishonest to leave the impression that plant-derived ingredients are a marketing invention. A number are excellent, and some are the best available option for their purpose.

Plant oils — squalane from olives, jojoba, sunflower seed oil with its high linoleic acid content — are effective emollients with good evidence behind them. Oat extract and colloidal oatmeal have genuine anti-inflammatory data. Green tea polyphenols are credible antioxidants. Centella asiatica has real supporting research for wound healing and barrier function.

Several mainstream actives are plant-derived or plant-inspired in origin: salicylic acid relates to willow bark, glycolic acid to sugar cane, retinoids to vitamin A.

The distinction being drawn here is not against plants. It is against the inference that plant origin by itself predicts safety or efficacy, when the evidence for each specific ingredient is available and is what should be consulted.

The appeal to nature, and why it persuades

The underlying reasoning error has a name. The appeal to nature is the assumption that what is natural is good and what is artificial is suspect, and it is persuasive because it substitutes an easy judgement for a hard one.

Skincare is unusually vulnerable to it. The relationship between what you buy and what happens to your face is genuinely uncertain, unfolds over months, and is confounded by season, sleep, hormones and everything else. Under that much uncertainty, a heuristic about the character of a product does real psychological work.

The clean beauty movement layered a moral dimension on top, which made the heuristic harder to question. Clean implies that the alternative is dirty, and arguing against the term reads as defending something rather than as asking what it means.

Recognising the structure of the argument is most of the defence against it. Once natural is understood as a claim about origin and not about effect, the question of what a product actually contains reasserts itself.

What to read instead

Read the ingredient list, which is regulated and ordered by concentration down to one per cent. Everything above that threshold is listed in descending order, which tells you far more than any word on the front of the box.

Look for the specific ingredient you came for, and check that it appears in the first third rather than trailing at the end among the decorative extracts. An active present below the trace threshold is present for the label.

Check the packaging against the ingredients. Vitamin C, retinoids and most antioxidants degrade in light and air, and a clear jar with a wide mouth undermines a good formula regardless of what is in it.

And check whether the claims are the kind that could be false. Contains ten per cent niacinamide is checkable. Formulated without twelve hundred ingredients is a statement about a list somebody else wrote. Free-from claims tell you about the marketing strategy, not the product.

The position worth holding

There is no reason to be against natural products and no reason to be for them. The category is not a category — it is a marketing bracket containing excellent products, useless ones and a few genuinely risky ones, sorted by a criterion that predicts none of that.

Judge ingredients individually. Squalane is good because squalane is good, not because it came from an olive. Niacinamide is good because niacinamide is good, not because it came from a reactor.

The one asymmetry worth remembering is that fragrance — of any origin — is the leading cause of cosmetic allergy, and essential oils are fragrance. If a single practical rule is taken from all of this, fragrance-free is a better filter than natural by a substantial margin.
