Few marketing ideas are as powerful, or as misleading, as the split between "natural" (good, safe, gentle) and "chemical" (harsh, dangerous, artificial). It sells enormous quantities of product and quietly distorts how people judge what is actually good for their skin. The framing sounds intuitive and falls apart under the slightest scrutiny.

The reality is that "natural" and "safe" are simply not the same word.

Everything is chemistry

Every ingredient — water, plant extracts, minerals, lab-made compounds — is a chemical. "Chemical-free skincare" is a marketing phrase, not a scientific possibility. Labelling something a "chemical" as though that alone makes it harmful is meaningless, because your entire skincare routine, and your skin itself, is made of chemistry.

The useful question is never whether an ingredient is a chemical, but how it behaves on skin and whether it suits you.

Natural can irritate; synthetic can be gentle

Plenty of natural extracts are common irritants or allergens, and some can be quite harsh, while many carefully formulated synthetic ingredients are gentle, stable and well tolerated. Some of the most reliable, well-studied skincare ingredients are made in a lab, and some of the most reaction-prone are entirely natural.

Naturalness tells you about origin, not about safety, gentleness or effectiveness — the things you actually care about.

Judging ingredients properly

Rather than sorting products into "natural good" and "chemical bad", judge them by how your skin responds, the evidence behind the ingredients, and how well the formula is made. Patch test regardless of origin, since natural products can react just as readily as synthetic ones.

Freeing yourself from the natural-versus-chemical myth is genuinely useful: it lets you choose based on what works for your skin instead of on a marketing story that was never accurate.

The dose makes the poison

The principle underlying all of toxicology was stated in the sixteenth century and has not been improved on: all things are poison, and nothing is without poison — only the dose determines whether something is harmful.

This dissolves the natural-versus-synthetic framing entirely. The relevant question about any ingredient is not where it came from but what it does at the concentration you are exposed to, by the route you are exposed by.

Water is lethal in sufficient quantity. Botulinum toxin, entirely natural, is among the most poisonous substances known. Retinol is beneficial at cosmetic concentrations and teratogenic at high oral doses.

Once dose enters the conversation, origin stops being informative. An ingredient list without concentrations is a partial document, and origin tells you nothing the concentration would not tell you better.

Lemon juice, and phytophotodermatitis

Applying lemon juice to skin appears in an enormous number of home remedies for pigmentation and acne, and it is one of the more reliably harmful things you can do to a face.

It has a pH around 2, which is far outside what skin tolerates and sufficient to cause chemical burns on sensitive areas. That alone would be reason enough to avoid it.

The more serious problem is furanocoumarins, phototoxic compounds in citrus peel and juice. On skin exposed to sunlight they cause phytophotodermatitis: blistering, burning, and subsequent hyperpigmentation that can last months or years.

The irony is complete. The remedy applied to lighten dark marks is a documented cause of severe, prolonged dark marks, and it is recommended precisely because lemons are natural.

Four more remedies worth abandoning

Baking soda has a pH around 9, against skin's natural 4.7 to 5.7. Applying it disrupts the acid mantle, impairs barrier function and interferes with the enzymes that regulate shedding. It is sold as a gentle exfoliant and is neither.

Undiluted apple cider vinegar causes chemical burns, and there are documented cases of significant injury from its use on skin. Diluted sufficiently to be safe, it does essentially nothing.

Toothpaste on spots relies on ingredients — sodium lauryl sulfate, flavouring oils, abrasives — that irritate skin, and the irritation produces post-inflammatory pigmentation that lasts far longer than the spot would have.

Coconut oil is highly comedogenic for many people and is a frequent cause of congestion when used on the face, despite an excellent reputation built on its performance on hair and body skin.

Undiluted essential oils

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts, frequently many times more potent than the plant material they came from, and applying them undiluted to skin is a recognised route to sensitisation.

Tea tree oil is a documented allergen, and oxidised tea tree oil substantially more so. Lavender, ylang-ylang, peppermint, cinnamon bark and citrus oils all appear regularly in patch test results.

Once sensitisation occurs it is permanent. The person is then reactive to that compound in any product at any concentration, which forecloses a great many options for the rest of their life.

Citrus oils compound the problem by being phototoxic, which means an essential oil applied before sun exposure carries the same risk described above for lemon juice.

Greenwashing and the certifications

Natural, clean, green and non-toxic have no legal definitions in most jurisdictions, which is precisely why they are used. A claim with a definition carries a substantiation requirement; a claim without one does not.

Genuine certification schemes exist and do set standards — COSMOS, Ecocert, NATRUE and Soil Association among them. They differ from one another substantially in what they permit, and none of them is what the word natural refers to unless the mark itself is on the pack.

A certification mark is at least a verifiable claim. The word alone is a marketing decision that anybody may make about any product.

It is also worth knowing that certified natural is a claim about sourcing and processing rather than about safety or efficacy. Those are separate questions the certification does not address.

Free-from claims, and what they actually communicate

Free-from marketing tells you about a competitor rather than about the product. Paraben-free, sulphate-free, silicone-free and the rest describe an absence, and an absence is only meaningful if the thing absent was a problem.

The paraben case is instructive. A single 2004 study found paraben traces in breast tumour tissue, with no control group and no causal demonstration, and its own author later stated it did not show what it was being cited to show.

The replacements adopted afterwards were not obviously safer. Methylisothiazolinone produced a documented epidemic of contact allergy substantial enough that regulators restricted it in leave-on products.

Silicone-free is a similar case. Dimethicone is inert, non-comedogenic in most people, and among the better-tolerated cosmetic ingredients; the campaign against it was aesthetic rather than evidential.

Where plant-derived ingredients genuinely excel

This is not an argument against plants. Several plant-derived ingredients are excellent and some are the best available for their purpose.

Squalane from olives or sugarcane is a superb emollient, stable and well tolerated. Colloidal oatmeal has genuine anti-inflammatory evidence and is used clinically. Centella asiatica has real supporting research for wound healing and barrier function.

Green tea polyphenols are credible antioxidants, and sunflower seed oil with its high linoleic acid content supports barrier repair in a way several other plant oils do not.

Note what these have in common: each is a specific ingredient with specific evidence, evaluated individually. That is the correct way to assess any ingredient, and the origin never entered into it.

Why the framing persists

The appeal to nature is a recognised reasoning error and it persists because it substitutes an easy judgement for a hard one. Assessing whether an ingredient works requires reading; assessing whether it sounds wholesome does not.

Skincare is unusually vulnerable to it because the relationship between purchase and outcome is genuinely uncertain and unfolds over months. Under that much uncertainty, a heuristic about a product's character does real psychological work.

The clean beauty framing added a moral layer that made the heuristic harder to question, because arguing against clean reads as defending dirty rather than as asking what the word means.

Recognising the structure is most of the defence. Once natural is understood as a claim about origin rather than about effect, the question of what a product contains reasserts itself naturally.

A better filter

Fragrance-free is a more useful screen than natural by a wide margin, because fragrance — of any origin, botanical included — is the leading cause of cosmetic allergy.

Short ingredient lists are the second, because every additional component is another candidate for a reaction and a shorter list is far easier to troubleshoot when something goes wrong.

Named actives at readable positions on the list are the third. An ingredient appearing after the preservative is present at trace level regardless of what the front of the box implies.

Those three filters cost nothing, require no chemistry background, and outperform any judgement based on whether the ingredients sound like plants.

The position, stated plainly

Everything is chemistry, including water, including your own skin. Chemical-free describes an empty container.

Plant-derived does not predict safety, and several of the most sensitising ingredients in cosmetics are botanical. Synthetic does not predict harm, and several of the best-tolerated ingredients are made in a reactor.

Judge ingredients one at a time, by what they do at the concentration used, in the packaging they arrive in. Squalane is good because squalane is good; niacinamide is good because niacinamide is good.

And never put lemon juice on your face.

The DIY recipes worth skipping entirely

Sugar or salt scrubs on facial skin. The particles are large and irregular, they produce micro-tears, and the resulting inflammation causes more pigmentation than the scrub removes.

Undiluted essential oils of any kind, for the sensitisation reasons above, and citrus oils in particular before sun exposure.

Anything involving raw egg, which carries a salmonella risk near the eyes and mouth for no demonstrated benefit, and anything involving crushed aspirin, which is not equivalent to salicylic acid in a formulated product.

And any recipe whose appeal rests on the ingredients being things you already have in the kitchen. That is a statement about convenience, not about whether the pH, concentration or stability is anywhere near appropriate for skin.

Reading a label in one minute

Ignore the front of the box entirely. Natural, clean, green and non-toxic have no legal definitions in most markets and tell you nothing about what is inside.

Turn it over. Ingredients above one per cent are listed in descending order, so the top third of the list is most of the product and the bottom is trace.

Find the ingredient you came for and check where it sits. Anything appearing after the preservative is present at trace level regardless of what the marketing implies.

Then scan for fragrance and the declared allergens — limonene, linalool, geraniol, citronellol, eugenol and the rest — and for a short list rather than a long one. That is the whole method, and it works on any product in any category.
