Collagen is having a lasting moment: creams promising to replenish it, powders and drinks promising to rebuild skin from within, and a general sense that if firmness comes from collagen, then collagen products must restore firmness. The logic is intuitive and the reality is more complicated — and worth understanding before spending on either format.

Collagen is the protein scaffolding in the deeper layer of skin that keeps it firm and plump. It declines with age and sun damage, and that decline is a real driver of lines and sagging. The question is not whether collagen matters — it does — but whether these products meaningfully affect it.

The trouble with collagen creams

The core problem for topical collagen is size. Collagen is a very large molecule, far too big to penetrate the skin's surface and reach the deep layer where structural collagen lives. Slathered on, it mostly sits on top as a decent moisturiser — the collagen acts as a humectant film that temporarily softens and smooths the look of skin, which can feel like 'firming' but isn't rebuilding anything.

So a collagen cream isn't useless; it's just a moisturiser with a compelling name. If it hydrates well and you enjoy it, fine — but you're paying for the story, not for structural repair.

What about collagen drinks and powders?

Ingestible collagen is a more genuine scientific debate. When you eat collagen, your body breaks it down into amino acids and small peptides, just like any protein, and does not ship it intact to your face. Some studies suggest certain collagen peptides may modestly support skin hydration and elasticity, but the research is mixed, often industry-funded, and far from the dramatic results marketing implies.

A reasonable honest summary: collagen supplements may offer a small benefit for some people, are generally safe, but are not a proven or powerful anti-ageing tool, and a normal protein-adequate diet already supplies the building blocks. Keep expectations modest.

What actually supports your collagen

The well-evidenced ways to protect and support skin's own collagen have little to do with collagen products. Sunscreen is the biggest — ultraviolet is the leading cause of collagen breakdown, so daily protection preserves what you have. Retinoids are the best-studied topical for encouraging collagen production over time. Vitamin C is a genuine cofactor the skin uses to build collagen.

Add the basics — not smoking, adequate sleep, a decent diet — and you have a real collagen strategy, none of which is a collagen-labelled jar or sachet. Protect it with sunscreen, support it with retinoids and vitamin C, and let the marketing collagen stay on the shelf.

The size problem, in numbers

Native collagen is an enormous molecule. A single tropocollagen unit is a triple helix of around three hundred kilodaltons, and in tissue those units assemble into fibrils larger again. For comparison, the rough working guide in dermatology is that a molecule needs to be under about five hundred daltons to cross the stratum corneum in useful quantity.

That is a difference of nearly three orders of magnitude. Collagen applied to intact skin does not penetrate to the dermis where collagen lives, and this is not a matter of formulation cleverness — it is a matter of the molecule being far too large for the gap.

Hydrolysed collagen, which appears on many labels, has been broken into much smaller peptides. Some of these are small enough to enter the upper epidermis. What they do not do is reassemble into collagen fibrils in the dermis, because that is not how collagen synthesis works.

Collagen is built inside fibroblasts from amino acids, assembled, secreted and cross-linked in place. There is no mechanism by which a peptide arriving from outside is inserted into an existing fibril.

What a collagen cream actually does

It moisturises, and it does so reasonably well. Hydrolysed collagen is a competent humectant — it binds water at the surface and holds it there, which softens fine lines and improves the immediate appearance of the skin.

That effect is real, visible and worth having. It is also identical in kind to what glycerin does at a fraction of the price, and glycerin has considerably more evidence behind it as a humectant.

Some collagen-derived peptides may additionally act as signalling molecules, and this is the mechanism that peptide skincare in general rests on. The evidence here is genuinely mixed and mostly concerns specific synthesised peptide sequences rather than the generic hydrolysed collagen in a jar.

So the honest description of a collagen cream is a moisturiser with a marketing story attached to it. That is not fraud, and it is not what the packaging implies.

The oral question, taken seriously

Drinking collagen is a more interesting question than applying it, because the digestive route is at least a route. Collagen is broken down in the gut into amino acids and small peptides, and those are absorbed.

The mechanism proposed is that certain dipeptides — proline-hydroxyproline in particular — survive digestion intact, appear in the bloodstream, and may act as signals that stimulate fibroblast activity. Hydroxyproline is unusual in being almost exclusive to collagen, so its presence could plausibly be read by the body as a signal that collagen has been degraded and needs replacing.

That is a coherent hypothesis rather than an established fact. It would mean collagen supplements work as a signal rather than as a building material, which is a meaningfully different claim from the one on the packaging.

The alternative explanation is simply that collagen supplements supply amino acids, and that people whose protein intake was marginal benefit from the additional protein rather than from anything specific to collagen.

Reading the supplement trials honestly

There are randomised controlled trials, and several report improvements in skin hydration and elasticity over eight to twelve weeks. Meta-analyses of these have concluded the effect is probably real and modest.

The caveats are substantial and they are consistent across the literature. Most trials are small, many are short, a large majority are funded by collagen manufacturers, and outcome measures vary enough that pooling them is difficult. Publication bias in a commercially driven field is a reasonable concern.

The effect sizes reported, where they are reported clearly, are modest — improvements in instrumental measures of hydration and elasticity rather than visible changes anybody would notice in a mirror without a before photograph.

The fair summary is that oral collagen probably does something small for skin hydration, that the mechanism is uncertain, and that the field's evidence base has a funding problem that has not been resolved.

The protein point that nobody makes

A typical collagen supplement provides ten grams of protein at a price per gram far above ordinary dietary protein. For somebody eating adequate protein already, the marginal amino acid supply is negligible.

For somebody eating poorly — which describes a meaningful proportion of people, particularly older adults — the supplement may be doing something genuinely useful and doing it as protein rather than as collagen. That is a real benefit arriving by an unexpected route.

Collagen is also an incomplete protein. It lacks tryptophan entirely and is low in several other essential amino acids, so as a protein source it is nutritionally inferior to almost any whole food alternative.

Anybody considering it primarily for skin would get more, more cheaply, from eating enough protein generally, which is an unexciting recommendation with far better evidence behind it.

What genuinely increases collagen

Topical retinoids are the best-evidenced intervention available without a prescription in most markets, and tretinoin with a prescription is better still. Retinoic acid upregulates procollagen synthesis and inhibits the matrix metalloproteinases that break collagen down, and this has been demonstrated on biopsy rather than inferred.

Sunscreen is the other pillar, and it works by preventing the destruction rather than driving the synthesis. Ultraviolet exposure activates the same matrix metalloproteinases that retinoids suppress, so unprotected skin is degrading collagen faster than any product can build it.

Vitamin C matters here in a specific and often-garbled way. It is an essential cofactor for the enzymes that hydroxylate proline and lysine during collagen synthesis — without it, collagen cannot be properly formed. This is a requirement rather than a boost, and it is met by adequate dietary intake.

In-clinic options that work by controlled injury — microneedling, fractional lasers, radiofrequency — provoke a genuine wound-healing response with new collagen deposition, and have the strongest evidence of any intervention in this list.

What destroys it, which matters more

Ultraviolet exposure is responsible for the large majority of visible collagen loss in exposed skin. Comparisons between sun-exposed and sun-protected skin on the same person are the clearest demonstration available, and the difference at sixty is dramatic.

Smoking is second and is frequently underestimated. It reduces blood flow to the dermis, increases matrix metalloproteinase activity, and depletes vitamin C. The characteristic pattern of premature facial lining in long-term smokers is well documented.

Chronically elevated blood glucose drives glycation, in which sugars bind to collagen fibres and cross-link them, leaving the tissue stiffer and more brittle. This is a slow process and it is not reversed by any topical product.

Chronic sleep deprivation raises cortisol, and cortisol is directly catabolic to collagen. This is one of several mechanisms by which the unglamorous inputs outperform the purchasable ones.

Where the money is better spent

If a fixed budget is available, sunscreen comes first, because preventing degradation is more efficient than driving synthesis and because it is the only intervention that also reduces cancer risk.

A retinoid comes second, and the pharmacy versions are inexpensive. This is the ingredient with the best evidence for actually increasing collagen through topical application, and it is available for a fraction of what a collagen serum costs.

Adequate protein and adequate vitamin C in the diet come third and are effectively free, and they are the inputs collagen synthesis actually requires.

A collagen supplement, if the money remains and the curiosity persists, is a defensible fourth. It is unlikely to harm anybody, it may do something modest, and it should be bought with the expectation of a small measurable change rather than a visible one.

The short answer

Collagen creams do not deliver collagen to the dermis. The molecule is far too large, and even if it were not, there is no mechanism for incorporating externally supplied collagen into existing fibrils. What they do is moisturise, which glycerin does more cheaply.

Collagen drinks are a more open question. The peptides are absorbed, some may act as signals, several trials report modest benefits, and the evidence base is small and heavily industry-funded. Probably something; probably small.

What reliably supports collagen is unremarkable and well established: daily sunscreen, a retinoid, not smoking, adequate protein and vitamin C, and in-clinic collagen induction for anybody wanting more than that.

The gap between what is marketed and what is supported in this category is unusually wide, which is worth knowing before spending a hundred pounds on a jar whose active ingredient cannot get past the first layer of your skin.
